JEFF MILLER
Originally from Chicago, Jeff grew up listening and playing to the sounds of Glenn Miller, Dave Brubeck, and Louis Jordan. Who knew decades later he’d be dancing to the same songs.
Now a Virginia Beach transplant, he got hooked on the swing dance scene in 2001. He is part of the scene as promoter, instructor, DJ, performer, and student. He started SwingVirginia.com in 2002 simply as a listing of events, but has grown into the Hampton Roads area's leading swing dance resource for lessons, dances, workshops, concerts, and public swing dance exhibitions.
He got roped as an Instructor from continually being pulled aside to help out with "Hey teach me that. That was cool." His teaching style obeys & breaks the rules by adding fun in his dance, and encourages dancers to create their own flavors of Lindy Zen. His passion is for Blues Dance and Lindy Hop, plus other styles Collegiate Shag, Charleston, Jitterbug/ECS, West Coast Swing, Boogie Woogie, and Balboa.
Plus, adds a little flair with his Aerials and other specialty classes: Musicality, Showstoppers, Dips, Tricks, Flips, DJ Instruction, and Instructor Academy Training.
He has taught locally since 2003 in the Virginia Veach/Norfolk area at weekly & monthly events. Plus he been an instructor at SwingDanceUSA (FL), Mystic Blues Workshop (CT), the Mid-Atlantic Challenge Workshop, Richmond’s Swing nights & Blues house parties. Plus runs weekly & monthly dance events.
Competitively, he took a chance and placed at the '05 & '06 Swing Fling in DC in Strictly and J&J Lindy. He then took a National title with two 1st place awards at the ’06 SwingDanceUSA in Strictly Lindy Hop and at the Advanced Jack&Jill Jitterbug, plus 3rd Place in Intermediate Lindy Jack & Jill and 3rd in Open Showcase.
As a DJ, he made his DJ debut in 2002 at the local workshops and swing nights. With his lack of sleep, he continues to grow his library and finds some of the sweetest songs and grooviest songs to keep dancers on the dance floor and off the chairs. He’ll crank out the traditional to modern faves, plus his curveball songs that make you say "What the hell is this? But hey, let's dance!” More DJ info here.
He has helped instruct, DJ, organize local & national events, workshops and exhibitions: Weekly/Monthly Swing Nights in Virginia Beach ’04-‘09, Virginia Beach Lindy Exchange ’03-’09, Dirt Cheap Blues ’05-’09, GargleblasterBlues Workshop ’06, Atlanta’s Enter The Blues ’07-’08, Raleigh-Durham Lindy Party 07, Richmond’s Blues House Parties, St Pete’s SwingDance USA ’07, Dallas’ Blues Boot Camp ’07-’08, Mystic Blues (CT), Chicago’s Windy City Lindy Exchange ’08, Bluesalicious ’09, Show Me Blues ‘09, and who knows where else.
